This how to guide tells you all you need to know about how to prepare for a hike.
First off, you'll need a sturdy rucksack to put everything in. Once you've got that sorted you'll need to decide where you're going. It's vitally important to research and plan your trip thoroughly, and always tell someone where you're off to and what time you'll be back. First of all, pack a map of the area, ideally inside a waterproof case.
Next, get a good compass to keep you moving in the right direction. There are many models to choose from, some with a thermometer included to keep an eye on the temperature.
It may be mild enough when you set off, but if you're heading into the country and walking for several hours, the conditions can change. So pack some extra warm clothing, just in case.
Don't forget a bottle of water, and if you're walking in winter weather or in the colder months, why not take a hot drink of tea or coffee in a flask. Be sure to pack some high energy food source, to keep you going between meals.
Item six on your list should be a small first aid kit. You can buy some compact versions which include all you need to cover those unforeseen accidents. Don't forget to pack a torch, and check the battery power before you go. If the light is weak, replace the batteries.
For your own safety, take some matches, but make sure they're in a watertight container. Every serious hiker should pack a whistle, to let people know where you are in case of an emergency, or poor visibility.
Finally, make sure, you've got your cell phone at the ready - fully charged and ready for use. You never know when you may need to contact someone.
