Gemma shows us HowTo mix the traditional colours with others this season as that's the fashionable thing to do ? for example, deep red with hot pinks.

Gemma users an unusual flower called Anthurium - a tropical plant, sometimes referred to as Flamingo Flower, that has a lovely glossiness to them this time of year, which is really glamorous. She recommends mixing your pinks, your deep reds, and your purples as well.

Gold and green are also very popular colours at this time of year, and so Gemma uses a gold vase and mixes an orangey plant called Euphorbia. She mixes a few stems of euphorbia with Alocasia leaves, which have a gorgeous texture to them

Always strip the thorns off, and you must remember to strip the foliage off below the waterline.

Twist the stems make sure you put the stems in the same direction each time, so that you get a dome shape. Once you've got that, your basic shape, just add in a few of the anthurium.

Stand it next to the vase to see the height you want your flowers and then trim the stalks accordingly.

You mustn't put them next to radiators or anywhere where you have electrical heat. Equally you mustn't put them where you have drafts either. Keep them fairly cool because then they will last longer.

Use a simple glass vase and tie and staple some ribbon around it so it looks like a little parcel.

Then dress up some flowers with glitter.

Gemma uses some lovely bright pink Melano roses then sprays them with glue, which sounds a bit mean to the flowers but they can survive it OK.

She then dips the flower into the glitter in a bowl

Put the vase at the edge of your surface and hold the roses up against it so you can measure where to cut it off

To create maximum impact, why not do three down the middle of the table.

Gemma shows us another one with Carnations. These are beautiful bi-coloured carnations with a beautiful lilac colour on the edges. Carnations and roses look really good when massed together, really elegant. Using all the same colour massed together looks really stylish.

One important area of personal health management is testing your cholesterol levels.

Anyone over 20 should have their levels checked and there is now a range of over the counter home tests that can monitor these accurately. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist which test is most suitable before you buy. The kits will come with easy to follow instructions, and give accurate results in about three minutes. Make sure you read the manufacturers guidelines carefully before proceeding with any tests.

The kit should contain the sealed test, a lancet, plaster and the set of instructions.

High cholesterol significantly increases the risk of having a heart attack. Cholesterol is an oily substance which is a building block for manufacturing many of the body's vital chemicals.

The main reason for high cholesterol levels in this country is a poor or unhealthy diet. It's important to know what your cholesterol level is, as high levels can go undetected for a long time and become noticeable when it blocks blood vessels.

There are two types of cholesterol in the body - LDL, which deposits cholesterol in arteries of the heart. HDL type actually removes cholesterol from the blood, reducing the risk of a heart attack.

Some test kits show total cholesterol, others total and HDL cholesterol levels. Results on most kits are easy to interpret, reporting low, Ok or high levels.

Ideally measure your cholesterol on an empty stomach. Some kits require you to fast for 12 hours before carrying out the test.

The kit gives you all the equipment needed to collect a finger prick sample of whole blood - if your cholesterol levels are high, you must consult your GP for further tests, and if you have any concerns about the test itself, you should seek advice from a medical professional.

Accurate Pregnancy Test

This easy to follow guide will tell you what signs to look out for to know if you are pregnant, and the different sorts of pregnancy tests that are available.

For most women, the first sign of pregnancy is when their periods stops. Although the absence of menstruation can be caused by other things, if the additional symptoms of tender or swollen breasts and a feeling of nausea persists - particularly in the mornings, then it is likely that she is pregnant.

The most normal way to test for pregnancy is to take a urine test. Pregnancy test kits are available over the counter from most chemists, and there are many brands to choose from. The good thing about them is that they provide privacy and quick results. Of course a GP or Family Planning Clinic can also carry out the test.

Home Pregnancy kits can detect pregnancy from six days after conception, or one day after a missed period. This offers an early advantage for arranging pre-natal care.

Pregnancy tests are based on the presence of a hormone, HCG, that pregnant women produce after conception. Modern test kits contain monoclonal antibodies that detect minute traces of HCG, These antibodies are molecules coated with a substance that bonds to the pregnancy hormone, if it is present, to produce either a positive or negative result. The woman collects urine and combines it with the antibodies provided in the kit. The test is timed, and a change of colour indicates the result. Some brands give results in as little as three minutes, and inform the user if the test hasn't been done properly. Always follow the manufacturers instructions exactly when using home pregnancy test kits, as inaccurate results are often recorded due to improper use of the test.

Most manufacturers claim a 99 per cent accuracy in laboratory tests, but there are additional factors such as using a product past its expiry date and exposure of the test to the sun which can lead to inaccurate results.

Most manufacturers recommend repeating the process a few days later to confirm the results. If you have any doubts about self testing for pregnancy, consult your GP or Family Planning Clinic.

Give Yourself a Manicure

More and more people are having regular manicures, and it's the sort of thing you can learn to do at home, By following a few simple rules, you can improve the appearance of your hands and nails. The basic equipment you'll need to complete the task are :- A pack of cotton wool balls, some fingernail polish remover, 1 emery board, a nail trimmer, a cuticle remover, a bottle of fingernail polish, and some paper towels.

Firstly, remove the old polish, by moistening a cotton wool ball with nail polish remover. There are different types of polish remover available. Press the cotton wool on the nail for a few seconds to soften the old polish. Wipe gently with the cotton ball on the nail starting at the base.

Next shape the nail - which should be filed into oval tips. Begin on the little finger of the left hand and move towards the thumb. Slant the fingernail file or emery board so that the filing is done mostly to the underside of the nail. File each nail from the corner to the centre, going from right to left and then left to right. On each side of the nail, stroke in one direction only. Repeat the process in the right hand.

Soak the fingers in a small finger bowl to soften the cuticles. A few drops of mild dish soap added to the water works well. Carefully dry the hand with a small towel, then place the hand on the towel. Dry the hand while pushing back the cuticle and skin on each fingernail, very carefully.

Apply the cuticle remover by carefully following directions on the bottle. Gently loosen the cuticle with an orangewood stick. Keep the cuticle moist, then wash gently and dry.

Clean under the free edge of the nail by dipping a cotton tipped stick in soapy water, and cleaning from the centre out to each side.

Occasionally you have to remove the cuticle with small scissors. Apply cuticle oil or cream at the base of the nail. Brush nails gently in soapy water with a downward motion. Dry your hands and nails thoroughly. Now use a fine emery board to buff your nails, giving them a smooth edge.

Apply the base coat using long strokes. When it is dry to the touch, apply polish lightly, with strokes from the base to the tip. Excess polish on the cuticle or nail can be removed with a cotton tipped stick. Apply a top or seal coat. If you brush it around and under the tips of the nail this will give added protection.

Last of all, apply lotion, if time permits. Your nails need to be completely dry. Start at the wrists, and move down to the fingertips. Manicuring - now you've nailed it!

Applying foundation is a straight forward procedure, but it is easy to make mistakes. This simple step by step guide can help you look great.

There are basically two types of foundation – the liquid and the powder types. When it comes to colours, there are literally hundreds to choose from. The first step is to choose the right colour for you. Visit a cosmetic counter or your local high street pharmacy and ask advice. You should be able to try samples that can be matched to your personal colouring.

Apply your foundation by dotting it on your forehead, cheeks, chin or nose. If you just want to concentrate on a specific smaller area, apply it there. Dampen a sponge and gently distribute the foundation across your face. The next step is to check the jaw line and hair line to ensure the foundation is well blended. Use the pads of your fingers and press gently all over your face. The heat will help the blending process. Go to a natural light source and check your application, and attend to any problem areas that stand out.

The main thing to remember is to blend - double checking the hair and jaw line – and make sure your face is the same colour as your neck. If you have light freckles on your face, use a sheer foundation to show them off. Darker freckles could be covered by a cream foundation which evens out the skin tones. There are different types of applicators to choose from – wet sea sponges, wedges and brushes. Try them all to find the one that suits you best.

One of the most important skills to learn when it comes to looking your best is how to apply eye-liner – it can really draw attention to your features when applied correctly. Here's how to master the basic techniques.

First of all gather all the equipment together that you will need – eye make up, eyeliner, kohl eyeliner, black eyeliner, powder eyeliner, white liquid eyeliner, eyeliner brush, pencil eyeliner, liquid eyeliner, and some cotton swabs

Basic pencil eyeliner is the type you'll use most often. You'll need to ensure the pencil is sharp. Do be careful as the formula is often smooth and is easier to smudge. Black eyeliner is the colour most often used, and liner in powder form can be used in place of other eyeliner to get a smoky look. White eyeliner can be used to draw light to parts of the eye and make it look larger.

To apply, start at one corner of the eye, and lightly draw a line. If you are having trouble with that, draw a few short lines and blend it all together with a cotton swab or sponge applicator. Liquid eyeliner is more difficult to apply, and takes
more effort, but the effects are more dramatic and long lasting.

First, dust the lids with some pressed powder or apply an eye make up base. Then, starting at the corner of your eye, use short strokes to direct the liner to the other side. Do the same for the top and bottom lid. Before it dries, use an applicator
to blend it, making it look natural and even. Don't forget that the shape of your eye is all important when deciding what look to go for. Your eye-liner is complete, and now you're ready to move on to the next stage of the make up process.

How To Apply Make-up - How To Apply Lipstick / Lip-Gloss

After applying your foundation and eye make up, lipstick can add the final touch to your look. You can also use lip liner to define the shape of your lips, and lip gloss to give you a shiny finish. This step by step guide will help you perfect the art.

There are basically six items that you will need – lipstick, lip balm, lip brushes, lip liner, facial tissues and a mirror.

To start with, chose the right lipstick colour for the correct occasion. Go for colours that complement the natural shade of your lips, using darker tones that complement your overall colouring. Matte lipsticks give a muted finish suitable for daytime use, satin & gloss finishes offer more of an evening look. Cosmetic counters and high street chemists have a large range of colours available.

Make sure you have applied all other make up before putting on lipstick and lip liner. Dab a small amount of lip balm or petroleum jelly to make your lips moist. Draw a thin line along the edge of your lips with a lip liner whose colour is one shade darker than the lipstick. Start in the middle of your upper lip and work outwards. Stay on the outer edges to open up thin lips and line well within the edges to understate very full lips.

Apply lipstick from the tube, or you can use a firm small lipstick brush. Coat the lips evenly, and make sure you stay within the edge of the lips.

When you have finished, blot your lipsto remove Any excess colour and to even out the texture.

Finally, five useful tips for applying lip stick:

Remember to touch up the lips after a meal, as lipstick can transfer to coffee cups.
For a longer lasting colour, shade both lips with lip liner after defining them. As your lipstick fades throughout the day, the liner offers a hint of colour.
Balance heavy eye makeup with a soft lip colour.
To give the illusion of a thicker top lip, line its outermost edges. Forgo the liner on the bottom lip.
Chill your lip liner so that it sharpens more easily.

How To Self Tan Safely

In recent years, a wide range of self tanning products have become available that can give you that "just been on holiday" look, without the potential long term skin damage that baking in the sun's ultra violet rays can cause.

Though generally recognised as safe, sunless tanning products, also known as self tanners can carry some risks, depending on how they're used and applied.

Most have an active ingredient called - dihydroxyacetone - DHA for short, a colour additive that reacts with dead skin cells on the outermost layer of skin and temporarily darkens the skin's appearance. It doesn't wash off, but fades as the dead skin cells fall off. within five to seven days.

The products come in different forms - lotions, creams, gels and sprays.

If you're starting out, it's advisable to use a gradual tanning moisturiser, or you can always mix a little self tanning lotion with
your own regular body moisturiser.

Here are some tips to help you achieve an even looking tan. Modern products should be able to give you a natural looking tan if they're applied correctly and carefully .

Choose a light or medium toned product, which tends to look more natural. If a product says medium to dark, or deep tan, its unlikely to suit fair skin. If you're olive skinned, the results from using a light tan may not be too impressive.

Make sure you wash your skin with a sponge or wash cloth before applying the product to remove excess dead skin cells. Exfoliate with a body polish or body buffer on dry areas like knees and elbows. Women should shave their legs to achieve an even application.

Apply the product evenly and lightly. Use less on dry or thickened skin, such as the ankles, knees and elbows, as these areas tend to absorb more of the lotion.

After you've applied the self tanning material to your face and body, wash your hands with soap and water to avoid colouring the palms, and use a cotton bud to remove any excess lotion from the eyebrows, nails and hairline.

Then use a cotton pad to apply the sunless tanner to the top of each hand.

Getting the right level of application on the fingers can be tricky, as a lot of the product can settle around the knuckles and joints, leading to an uneven colour.

Make self tanning the last thing in your personal grooming routine. To prevent staining your clothes, wait until the sunless tanner dries completely, after about 15-20 minutes. The results can take up to 24 hours to develop fully, so don't slap on more if you think you've under-applied.

Many people enjoy being pampered when getting their nails pedicured professionally, but by following this simple step by step guide you can

get your feet in tip top shape at home in a little over half an hour.

Items you'll need for the pedicure – a basin or tub, foot soak or bath salts, pumice footstone, small brush, nail polish remover, cotton pads, nail polish, base coat for nails, top coat for nails, clippers, file, cuticle stick, lotion and foot scrub treatment.

Remove old nail varnish using nail polish remover and a paper towel or cotton pads. Both are better than a tissue, offering more friction. Always try to use a non-acetone polish remover, as its less drying to nails and cuticles.
If necessary clip or file your nails while they're dry. If using an emery board, file in one direction using smooth strokes. Clip your toenails straight across using a toenail clipper or scissors
Fill a basin with several inches of warm water. Add foot soak or bath salts as the tub fills. Soak your feet for 10-15 minutes
Dry off thoroughly and apply cuticle cream or lotion. Gently ease the cuticles back by making tiny circles against the cuticles with an orangewood stick. They should be supple due to the soaking.
Massage your feet with moisturising lotion, use an exfoliating lotion if the skin is dry and use a pumice footstone on roughened areas.
Separate your toes, putting cotton between them, unless you have a ready made pedicure device.
Apply a base coat, which holds the polish in place and makes it last longer. They are usually clear or slightly coloured, and help strengthen the nail to avoid breakages. Give it time to dry.
Choose your desired shade of nail polish and apply, cleaning up any stray marks with a cotton swab dipped in polish remover. After waiting two minutes, add a second coat for deeper colour. If you can, sweep it on in three strokes from base to tip, first up the centre, then each side.
Complete your pedicure with a top coat of clear polish, to add shine, and protect from chipping

If possible, leave your shoes off for at least an hour to allow the polish to thoroughly dry.

Contrary to popular belief there are no limits on what you can buy and take with you when you travel between EU countries, as long as it is for personal use, and not for resale. Taxes (VAT & excise) are included in the price you pay. To determine whether the tobacco and alcohol you buy are for personal use, each country sets guidelines

It's important to remember that shops and hypermarkets in France are often closed on Sundays, and most shops, though not the large hypermarkets close for a 2 hour mid-day break.

Most people bring home quantities of alcohol and tobacco, but there are important tips to be aware of when buying these items. The amount you bring in must be for your own use, and transported by you. The term "own use" includes goods for your own consumption and gifts. If you are bringing in goods for resale or for any payment, they are regarded as being for a commercial purpose. The personal guidelines published by Her Majestys revenue and Customs are more that enough to keep the average person going throughout the barbeque season, but many are unaware of the actual figures.

Each individual can bring in :

3200 cigarettes
200 cigars
400 cigarillos
3 kilograms of tobacco
110 litres of beer (that's nearly 200 pints)
90 litres of wine (120 standard bottles)
10 litres of spirits
20 litres of fortified wine, such as Sherry and Port.

It's important to know these figures, as anyone suspected of bringing in exceptional amounts of alcohol or tobacco may attract the interest of customs officers, who need to be certain that the goods are for personal use, and not for commercial purpose. Some EU countries have their own rules or limits about the amount of tobacco that you can bring back without paying UK duty - make sure you check with each countries authority if in doubt.

If you are travelling by coach, ferry or aircraft, and they store your goods while returning to the UK make sure that you collect the exact goods you bought when you get back to the UK. If you have doubts about the products you are bringing in, you should speak to a customs officer in the red channel or on a red phone point.
